Horseback Riding in Ga.: 20+ Unforgettable Trail Rides

Blue Ridge Mountain Trails at Hells Hollow, Blue Ridge, Ga.
319 Hells Hollow Rd, Blue Ridge, GA 30513 | (706) 408-7433

This rustic outpost in North Georgia has more than just trail rides. For young buck-a-roos they have pony rides too. Often kids love the idea of horse back riding, but when they actually get up on the horse, it can be a different story. Pony rides are a great way to introduce them to horseback riding.

Hell’s Hollow also has fishing, gem mining, a nature trail and Zipline. Note: GPS does not get you to the Outpost. If you plan to go horseback riding in Blue Ridge, Ga., make sure to visit their website and follow the directions there.

For young ones (and maybe not so young ones) will like the rocking horses at Brasstown Valley Stables.

Callihan’s Adventure Trail Rides, Blue Ridge, Ga.
933 Cashes Valley Rd, Cherry Log, GA 30522 | (706) 258-2276

Ride through rivers, trot in the mountains, or just ride through the valley. Picnic rides available as well, something for everyone.

A Step Above Stables, Blairsville, Ga.
696 Mauney Cir, Blairsville, GA 30512 | (706) 745-9051

A Step Above trails go through the beautiful North Georgia Mountains and overlook Lake Nottley. A Step above can accommodate heavier riders too. For the little ones, there are pony rides.

Trackrock Stables, Blairsville, Ga.
202 Trackrock Camp Rd., Blairsville, Ga. 30512 | (706) 745-5252

Bordered on three sides by the Chattahoochee National Forest, Trackrock is an isolated oasis. Guided horseback trail rides are for first-time or skilled riders.

Sunny Farms North, Dahlonega, Ga.
1332 Long Branch Rd, Dahlonega, GA 30533 | (706) 867-9167

Sunny Farms rents horses for unguided trail rides. The horses know the route and the owners know the horses, so you don’t have to be an expert to ride.

Gold City Corral, Dahlonega, Ga.
49 Forrest Hills Rd, Dahlonega, GA 30533 | (706) 867-9395

Take a horseback trail ride during the day and stay for a horse-drawn wagon ride in the evening. Trail rides are for novice to experienced riders.

Georgia Frontiers, Canton, Ga.
545 Ruff White Road, Canton, Ga. 30114 | (678) 234-8852

I love Georgia Frontiers tagline – Where city slickers come to ride. This is probably some of the closest horseback riding in Atlanta. So if you live on the west side of the city, this probably answers your question where is the closest horse riding near me.

Brasstown Valley Stables, Young Harris, Ga.
6321 U.S. 76, Young Harris, GA 30582 | (706) 379-9900

Brasstown Valley Stables, is part of the Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa, however you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to book a trail ride. Best part about trail rides here; afterwards you can relax those sore muscles at the Brasstown Valley Spa. Learn more about our adventure at Brasstown Valley Stables and nearby Hiawassee Ga.

Sunburst Stables, Helen, Ga.
S3181 State Hwy. 255; Clarkesville, GA | (800) 806-1953

There are quite a few places to go horseback riding in Helen, Ga. Sunburst Stables offers guided horseback trail riding into the Chattahoochee National Forest. If it were me, I’d book the Moonshine Still ride – it takes you out to an authentic moonshine still in the woods.

Chattahoochee Stables, Helen, Ga.
2180 GA-17, Sautee Nacoochee, GA 30571 | (706) 878-7000

One of the few horseback riding places we’ve seen with no age limit. Kids under 5yo can ride with an adult! Take an hour guided trail ride, including 1.5 miles of horseback riding trials along the river (the only “river ride” around!) Trips go out every hour.

Lake Lanier Equestrian Center, Buford, Ga.

Ride through the open fields of Barnsley Resorts 3,000 acres. For younger children, they also offer cowboy activities like horse painting in the corral.

Southern Cross Guest Ranch, horseback riding Madison, Ga.

I don’t just want to know where is the closest horseback riding near me, I also want to know where is the best. Southern Cross Guest ranch is one of my favorites, probably because there are so many horses, and in addition to riding, you also visit the tack room to pick out your saddle and help to brush your horse down before and after your trail ride. You can also stay overnight – a perfect dude ranch in Georgia.

What to Know Before You Go Horseback Riding in Ga.

Before you book a horseback riding adventure, here are a few things you should know –

Call ahead. Some of the horseback riding establishments listed above will take walk ups, but why chance it. Plus, they can better serve you and your group if they know you are coming.

Ask About Ages. Often horseback riding companies have age restrictions. A few will let your child ride with an adult. Ask before you go as everyone is different.

Know Your Child. Even if your child is old enough to go horseback riding, think about whether it will be too much for them. We went riding at Brasstown Valley and a little girl was there for her birthday. You could tell it was something she had been talking and dreaming about forever, but when she got way up on the horse, she was terrified. The barn manager did a great job calming her fears, but I think this happens quite a bit – so be prepared.

Ask about Weight. All the horseback riding establishments will have a weight limit, I saw 220 for a few places, others were a bit higher. Make sure you ask before you go. You don’t want to get there an not have a horse you can ride.

Look for Directions on the website. Several horseback riding stables noted that GPS would not get you to their barn. Be sure before you head out to get directions directly from the stables site vs. relying on GPS.

Tip Your Guide. Most horseback riding guides work on tips, so be sure to bring a little extra for them.

This is an excellent article listing hack stables for renting horses by the hour but when the state parks, a couple were left off and, most importantly, the incredible trails at Jake and Bull Mountain in the national forest just west of Dahlonega. Here is a link below to the Chattahoochee Trail Horse Association’s website that lists a couple of other parks and maps of those trails along with a map of Jake and Bull. CTHA maintains trails in most of those park trails with monthly and quarterly trail work. Jake and Bull is the jewel of the southeast with over 20,000 man hours volunteered over a ten year period. We would appreciate a follow up article listing Jake and Bull along with the work we do. CTHA is dedicated to the future of horses on trails.
